A WORTHY KINGDOM LABOURER

MAIN TEXT: Luke 9:61-62 And another also said, Lord, I will follow thee; but let me first go bid them farewell, which are at home at my house.
And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God

Revelation 3:11 – I am coming soon. Hold fast what you have, so that no one may seize your crown

Jesus is making the point that the work of service in the Kingdom of God will not wait. It is an urgent task. The Lord’s work of service unto Him demands a hasty obedience. On the face of it, the request of 9:61 seems a reasonable request to make because of the demands of family life. But Jesus replied “No one who puts his hand to the plough and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God”.

Jesus was saying that a person who was worthy to be His disciple had to place the same priority on the forward-going spiritual mission that Jesus called him to perform, and could not let himself be distracted or diverted by thoughts of what he was leaving behind, or had left behind, in his former life.

When people plough the field, they need to keep their eyes straight ahead and not to look back. Otherwise, the furrows will be crooked. Jesus uses this metaphor to describe people who hesitate about following Christ. Those who do not respond to his calling at once are not fit to serve God.

TIME IS RUNNING OUT, DELAY COULD BE DANGEROUS

PRAYER: Lord Jesus Christ, help me to commit all of myself to all of the work I have been given to do. Help me to finish well in the Christian race.
