FRIENDSHIP WITH GOD
MAIN TEXT: James 2:23—And the Scripture was fulfilled that says, “Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness”—and he was called a friend of God.
John 15:14—You are my friends if you do what I command you.
One of the most outstanding examples of a friendship in the Bible is the relationship the patriarch Abraham cultivated with God. It is a most remarkable bond between a human being and the all-powerful Creator God. In Isaiah 41:8 God refers to the nation of Israel as “My servant,” but then surprisingly refers to Abraham as “My friend.”
Abraham had deep respect for and great confidence in God. Abraham was put to the supreme test when God tested him by asking him to sacrifice his son Isaac. By demonstrating his willingness to obey, Abraham proved that he was dependable and loyal to God under the most difficult of circumstances.
A friend of God enjoys favorable intimacy. Imagine being a friend to the Almighty God. He shares secret things with you. A friend of God is not taken unawares by Satan. God confines in His friends—a rare privilege. “Greater love has no one than this that someone lay down his life for his friends. John 15:13”
BE A FRIEND OF GOD
PRAYER: Lord Jesus Christ, I pledge to become a true friend and to keep a good friendship with God, so help me. Amen
