QUENCHING THE HOLY SPIRIT
Main Text: 1 Thessalonians 5:19 – “Do not quench the spirit”.
Ephesians 4:30 – And grieve not the Holy Spirit of God, in whom ye were sealed unto the day of redemption.
The presence of the Holy Spirit in believers demonstrates the genuineness of our faith. It proves that we are God’s children and secures eternal life for us. It is the seal of promise and guarantee of our inheritance, till the day of redemption. His power works in us to transform us and point us to a taste of the total change we will experience in eternity.
The Holy Spirit is the third person in the Trinity. He is the engine room or the power house of the Triune God (Trinity). He is able to sway us believers in the direction of God’s goodness, mercy and truth. The Holy Spirit marks the beginning of the Christian experience. We cannot belong to Christ without His spirit (Romans 8:9). We cannot be united to Christ without His Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:17). We cannot be adopted as His children without His spirit (Romans 8:14 – 17). We cannot be in the body of Christ except by baptism in His spirit (1 Corinthians 12:13).
When the spirit nudges us towards spiritual growth and change and we respond negatively, we are taken to have put out the fire of the Holy Spirit in us. With time, things we once considered wrong appear not to be as bad anymore. Our relationship with God seem not cordial or disconnected because we have brushed aside the Holy Spirit’s conviction and our conscience become cauterized. The longer this goes on, the harder it becomes for us to see the root of our problem.
Thankfully, we can pray and ask God to show us our sin. When we turn away from sin and recommit ourselves to God, recognizing the Holy Spirit’s power, God will forgive us and revive the power and influence of His Spirit within us.
WHEN YOU PUT OUT THE HOLY SPIRIT’S FIRE IN YOU, YOU QUENCH THE HOLY SPIRIT.
Prayer: Holy God show us where we have resisted your Holy Spirit. Help us to listen when you speak and make us right with you always.BY BISHOP NGOZI DURUEKE (HE REIGNS CHAPEL INTERNATIONAL) To send your testimony, write us: firstname.lastname@example.org.
