WALK IN GOD’S MERCY

MAIN TEXT: Proverbs 3:3-4
Let not mercy and truth forsake thee: bind them about thy neck; write them upon the table of thine heart: So shalt thou find favour and good understanding in the sight of God and man.

Psalm 145:8-9 The Lord is gracious and full of compassion, slow to anger and great in mercy. The Lord is good to all, and His tender mercies are over all His works.”

Today’s scripture blends truth and mercy. ‘Make sure they are always with you and never forsake them.” Truth needs to be spoken and we need to be right; but mercy needs to be combined with truth. They go together. Truth without mercy becomes callused. It is often legalistic. And mercy without truth becomes sentimental and wishy-washy and does not really take a stand. And mercy alone is not courageous and has no holiness to it. It must be mercy and truth.
Mercy is compassion that forbears punishment even when justice demands it. In the judicial system, granting clemency, which is another word for mercy, depends entirely on the will of the grantor, who doesn’t have to give a reason for granting it.

We first saw the mercy of God in action, when He covered the shame of Adam and Eve with the skin of the sacrificed animal – Genesis 3:21 “The Lord God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife and clothed them”.

We cannot save ourselves. In our sin we would all perish, falling under God’s wrath and curse forever. Yet, in Christ mercy has triumphed. His mercy covers all your sins; his mercy forgives all your sins, every last one. And why can Christ’s mercy perform such wonder? He can because Christ suffered the full punishment for your sin.

MERCY IS GOD’S PATIENCE IN ACTION

Prayer – O God, let your mercy always go before me and stand for me always in Jesus’ name. Amen.
