THE AHITHOPHEL SPIRIT
MAIN TEXT: 2 Samuel 15:31 ‘’Now David had been told, ‘Ahithophel is among the conspirators with Absalom.’’ So David prayed, ‘’O Lord turn Ahithophel’s counsel into foolishness.’’
2 Samuel 17:23 – ‘’When Ahithophel saw that his advice had not been followed, he saddled his donkey and set out for his house in his home town. He put his house in order and then hanged himself. So he died and was buried in his father’s tomb’’.
Who is Ahithophel, and why did he fall? He was David’s counselor. He betrayed David and defected to his son, Absalom. Furthermore, he fell because he lacked integrity. There are people who live with integrity and those who do not, interestingly, they are both rewarded. The first group live with an abiding sense of God’s peace and security, while the second group with the constant fear of being found out. A person with integrity is complete and undivided.
They adhere to good moral principles in every area of life. You should be able to hold your ground of faith in the face of trials. Do not let circumstances play you around. Today, the faith of our fathers is coming under increasing attack. Scriptural principles which have guided us for generations are being challenged and undermined by the ‘Ahithophels’ of this world who sit in places of power. The bible spoke about it and told us to be alert, but not afraid.
God said, ‘’I am with you until the end of age”. It is not every gift that you should receive and not every office that you should accept. Check them out with the word of God. There are some gifts that are intended to run you out of faith. Refuse to sell out for money; refuse to sell out to win the favor of those in high places. Stand squarely on the word of God and refuse to be lured out of the grace of God.
