SELF CONTROL

MAIN TEXT: Proverbs 16:32—Better a patient person than a warrior, one with self-control than one who takes a city.

PSALM 37:16 Better is the little that the righteous has than the abundance of many wicked.

The virtue of self-control is one that we long for, yet few attain it. In fact, most people do not even try because they would rather not say ‘no’ to themselves. Self-control is highly respected and greatly desired. We know that without it, we create many troubles for ourselves. How many times have we given in to the urgency of our demands, even when the desires are not relevant?

Instead of waiting for further instructions, we move forward in our wisdom, thinking we will please somebody, only to discover the plans changed. We must learn to wait on God to fulfill his promise. Occasionally we think God needs our help, so we act and create a mess at last.

People have become lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, fashion conscious, unholy, unforgiving, slanderous, etc. All these attributes emanate from an underlying selfishness that seeks to glorify ‘self’ rather than God. In the New Testament, we hear the term taking off our ‘old self’ and putting on our ‘new self’ (Romans 6, Eph. 4, Col. 3). Yet, if we don’t determine to put off ‘self’ and allow the Holy Spirit to control us, we cannot have successful relationships, carry out basic responsibilities or maintain a fruitful personal life.

PRAYER: Holy Spirit, empower me so that my selfish natures will not bring my fall in Jesus’ name Amen
